Wondering what level of involvement and discipline is appropriate for a fiancé to have with a future stepson?  In this episode, Jennifer and Peter have an interactive coaching session with Diana M. She doesn’t know how to keep the peace in her home and preserve the relationship between her son and her fiancé (his future step-father.)  About her fiancé, she says, “My fiancé is telling me what he thinks I should do, very harshly, then I feel like I become defensive.  It just becomes a fight between my fiancé and I and I don’t like that.”  As Peter and Jennifer Diepstraten coach Diana, she sees how attempting peace-keeping in their relationship is likely making things worse and then they guide her to have a conversation with all three of them to create a real partnership and sense of teamwork.  In an a-ha moment, Diana sees a new possibility for her family, “We might have a closer relationship, all three of us, because of it (creating team).  I’m willing to do it!”

In this episode of the Amazing Relationships Podcast, Jennifer and Peter Diepstraten have an interactive coaching session with anonymous caller Jane, who’s frustrated by her boyfriend and his 17-year-old son’s lack of communication.  The 17-year old son recently graduated from high school, sits in his room and plays video games all day, while his friends have gotten jobs or gone off to college.  But Jane’s boyfriend seems powerless to help the son, and Jane is left stymied because she doesn’t know how to act since she’s “just a girlfriend.”  Jane says, “I know I’m not supposed to get in the fray, it’s not my kid.  You know, who am I? I’m just a girlfriend.  But it’s driving me crazy.”  Jane wants to know how to help her boyfriend and his son succeed so she can be a supportive girlfriend, rather than alienate them.  Tune in to hear what Jane sees through getting her questions answered and her excitement about the new way she sees she can approach her boyfriend and his son.

Jennifer and Peter Diepstraten interview Laura Doyle, author of New York Times’ Bestseller, The Surrendered Wife, The Surrendered Single and Things Will Get as Good as You Can Stand. Her books have been translated into 16 languages and published in 27 countries.  In this episode, Laura shares how she went from nearly divorcing her husband to being cherished and adored, and is now happily married for 25 years.  She teaches the Six Intimacy Skills, the first of which is how to have good self-care.  While many people have thought The Surrendered Wife was anti-feminist, it was not, it was really verified relationship advice for women. “A surrendered wife just knows that she can’t change anyone else besides herself, so she doesn’t try.  Instead she focuses on her own happiness.  And that, in turn, improves the intimacy in marriage,” shares Laura.  To learn more about what self-care is and what it isn’t, and how it can improve your marriage, enjoy the show!  To grab your free training videos from Laura, this episode’s show notes, and our free training on how to get a fresh perspective on your relationship, visit us at www.familyco.com/lauradoyle
